Corpus Christi, Texas - The UT Arlington women's basketball team dropped a 72-66 heartbreaker to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Wednesday night at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas. UTA fell to 8-12 overall and 3-4 in league play.
Meghan Nelson and Tamara Simmons did what they do best and attacked the basket in the first half. UT Arlington connected on 10 fast break points and limited their turnovers to a season-low five.
The Mavs and Islanders went back and forth with seven lead changes and six ties until Lauren Smith sent A&M-Corpus Christi into the locker rooms with a 35-33 advantage.
Myeisha Myles had a lot to do with the Islanders lead at half, connecting on 12 points. UTA finished the first half shooting 46.7 percent to the Islanders 40 percent but were out-rebounded by a 25-13 margin.
Nelson and Simmons' energy and intensity seemed to feed off into the rest of the Mavericks as a combination of points from several players led to a 16-4 run and a 50-39 advantage with 13:04 on the clock.
With the Mavs holding onto a seven point advantage, the Islanders changed their offense and drove the ball to the basket in hopes to be sent to the line which proved successful.
The Mavericks struggled all night on the defensive end which led to several second chance points for the Islanders. A&M-Corpus Christi took the lead for good after a put back by Scott with 52 second left in regulation.
UTA had several opportunities to win the game but miscues in the final seconds proved costly. Simmons led the Mavericks with 21 points.
Up next for the Mavericks is a meeting at Northwestern State, Saturday, February 6 at 2 p.m.
