UT Arlington drops to 0-2 on the season after a 63-41 loss to George Washington Sunday afternoon at Texas Hall.
The Mavericks defense made some good plays throughout the game, but they were only able to manage a 30.6 percent field goal percentage on offense.
They lost the turnover battle 25-15, and George Washington's post game was dominant as they outscored the Mavericks 34-16 in the paint.
"We didn't execute, and we didn't run some of the stuff that we wanted to," said head coach Samantha Morrow. "We forced shots at times, and we need to get back to the drawing board. They're big, tall, and athletic, but it's nothing that we don't see on a daily basis."
George Washington took a 5-0 lead to start the game and never surrendered it. Several small runs extended the lead to 10 points by halftime, and Tara Booker scored 13 of George Washington's 28 first half points.
The second half proved to be much of the same. Turnovers continued to plague the Mavericks, and George Washington utilized efficient shooting from the floor to lead by as many as 24 points.
Senior Bianca Sauls scored eight points, marking the second consecutive game as the Mavericks top scorer. Sauls also added four rebounds.
Freshman Takiyah Langford scored seven points on three of four shooting, and Desherra Nwanguma scored four points and added five rebounds.
George Washington was led by center Sara Mostafa, who scored 21 points and snagged eight rebounds.
Turnovers and rebounding were two big problems," Morrow said. "We're struggling shooting the ball, but if we cut the turnovers down we don't give them easy shots. If we box out and rebound better on defense, we don't give them easy shots and push the ball better."
The Mavericks play again Wednesday when they travel to Fayetteville to take on the Arkansas Razorbacks. Tip-off is set for 11 a.m.
