Final Stats
Arlington, Texas - The UT Arlington men's tennis team recorded their second straight win Friday afternoon against Columbia, 4-3 at the UTA Tennis Center. The victory improved the Mavericks to 7-5 overall while the Lions fell to 5-5 on the season.
"Today's win was a great way to keep the momentum we carried from California," said head coach Diego Benitez. "The guys picked up right where they left off. We are playing good tennis and we are excited about our next match Sunday."
The Mavericks opened tennis action losing the doubles point but came back strong in singles play, winning the top four flights for the 4-3 win.
Top doubles team of Mindaugas Celedinas and Yauheni Yakauleu suffered an 8-5 loss to Nathaniel Gery and Kevin Kung while Lucas Leppen and Brieuc Hamon also dropped the No. 2 spot against Tizian Bucher and Cyril Bucher, 8-6.
David Subirats and Nicolas Moreno picked up their third straight win at the No. 3 position against Rajeev Deb-Sen and Haig Schneiderman, 8-3.
With Columbia leading 1-0, UTA stepped it up and recorded wins at the No.1, 2, 3 and 4 singles spots.
Celedinas led off with by defeating Schneiderman, 6-1, 6-3 in the top flight while Leppen followed with a 7-6, 6-1 win against Bucher in the No. 2 spot.
Yakauleu took care of business in the No. 3 position as he won a 6-3, 6-4 decision over Kung. Hjertonsson picked up a three-set win against Gery in the No. 4 flight with scores of 5-7, 6-4 and 6-2.
In the No. 5 position, Subirats suffered a tough loss against Bucher, 6-0, 2-6 and 6-4. Lateko also lost the No. 6 flight, falling 7-6, 6-3 to Deb-Sen.
The Mavericks will be back in action Sunday when they host New Mexico State at the UTA Tennis Center. Match time is set for 11 a.m.
