Final Stats
Arlington, Texas - The No. 63 women's tennis team won their third straight match Tuesday afternoon against Xavier University, 5-2 at the Walnut Creek Country Club. With the win, the Mavericks improved their record to 6-2 overall and are 4-2 against non-conference opponents.
"It was a great overall effort by our team," said head coach Diego Benitez. "The girls were able to adjust to the conditions and overcome obstacles. It was great to play at home against and get a good win before returning back to conference play this weekend."
UT Arlington dropped two of the three doubles matches, losing the doubles point but came back strong to win five of the six singles flights.
UTA's top doubles team of Giada D'ortona and Linda Aqvist suffered an 8-6 loss against Kelsey Kinnard and Tiffanie Treece while Daiana Negreanu and Natalia Mayuk also suffered a loss in the No. 2 position against Christie Pleiman and Katie Pleiman with a score of 9-7.
Maria Martinez-Romero and Nikola Matovicova were the lone Mavericks to record a win in doubles play against Kally Alkire and Andrea Wolf with a final score of 8-3. It was the duos third straight win in doubles.
With the Musketeers leading 1-0 heading into singles play, the No. 63 women stepped it up and controlled almost all of the singles flights. UTA recorded wins in the No. 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 positions.
In the top flight, Negreanu collected a 7-5, 6-3 win against Pleiman while Aqvist easily won a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Treece in the No. 2 position.
Mayuk was the only Maverick to suffer a lost, falling 5-7, 2-6 against Andrea Wolf in the No. 3 position.
Martinez-Romero remains perfect in singles play, improving to 8-0 on the season after recording a 6-0, 6-4 win in the No. 4 spot against Kinnard.
D'ortona notched a 7-5, 3-6, and 6-2 victory over Alkire in the No. 5 position while Katarina Mlcochova won a 7-5, 6-3 decision against Pleiman in the No. 6 spot.
The Mavericks return to conference action on Saturday, March 12 against McNeese State at the UTA Tennis Center. Match time is set for 11 a.m.
