Final Stats
Arlington, Texas - The UT Arlington women's tennis team's domination of the Southland Conference continued Sunday afternoon when they defeated Texas A&M-Corpus 7-0 at the UTA Tennis Center. The No. 58 Mavericks improved their overall record to 15-4 and remained flawless in conference action with a 9-0 mark.
"It was a very tough match regardless of the score," said head coach Diego Benitez. "Corpus Christi is a very good team and they fought hard every match. I'm very happy the way our team kept their focus and battle to put a great final score."
With two conference matches remaining in the regular-season, UT Arlington is looking to remain perfect in conference and head into the conference tournament on April 29th as the No. 1 seed.
UTA extended its win streak to eight and recorded their fourth straight shutout victory against a conference opponent.
Linda Aqvist, Giada D'ortona and Maria Martinez-Romero remain perfect in singles action all with a 9-0 league record. Doubles team of Martinez-Romero and Nikola Matovicova improved their mark to 9-0 following today's victory.
The Mavericks opened the match with doubles where they easily recorded the point by winning all three flights.
Duo of senior Daiana Negreanu and Aqvist handed Mirna Cicak and Sandra Burges an 8-6 setback in the top flight.
Undefeated team of Matovicova and Martinez-Romero took care of business in the No. 2 flight against LeAnne Mascall and Bianca Discordia, winning 8-5.
D'ortona and Natalia Mayuk handed Mia Matuszak and Stefania Nicolae an 8-6 setback in the No. 3 position, improving their record to 7-0 in conference.
Negreanu played in her final home match of the season and in grand fashion won a 3-6, 6-1, and 6-0 win against Mirna Cicak in the top flight.
"Today was Daiana's last home match and it was very special day for her. She has being an irreplaceable asset to our program and we will miss her very much. I feel fortune to have had the chance to coach a player of her caliber. She had a great match in both singles and doubles and it was good for her finish her college career at home in style with a great pair of hard fought victories," said Benitez.
Aqvist won a 7-6, 6-1 victory against Discordia in the No. 2 spot while Martinez-Romero defeated Stefania Nicolae a 7-6, 6-0 setback in the No. 3 flight.
Mayuk defeated Burges with scores of 4-6, 6-2, and 6-3 in the No. 4 position while Katarina Mlcochova collected a 6-2, 6-1 decision against Matuszak in the No. 5 flight.
D'ortona recorded a 6-3, 6-2 win over LeAnne Mascall in the No. 6 spot.
The Mavericks will now hit the road for a pair of conference matches this Saturday and Sunday. UTA first travels to Hammond, LA for a match up against SE Louisiana on Saturday and closes out the regular-season with a meeting against Nicholls State on Sunday. Match times are set for 1 p.m. and 11 a.m.
