EAST LANSING, Michigan - The UT Arlington women's basketball team fell 83-39 on the road to the Michigan State Spartans on Sunday afternoon.
"I'm disappointed, but I liked Aron Garcia's effort," UT Arlington head coach Samantha Morrow said. "I thought she gave it everything she had."
The Mavericks scored first on a jumper from junior Malaika Green to open the game, but Michigan State responded with a 15-0 run to take control. The Spartans utilized their height advantage early, scoring seven of their 12 field goals inside the paint.
"We have a specific defense we want to run and we weren't over there," Morrow said. "We gave up layups because our rotation wasn't where it was supposed to be."
UT Arlington headed halftime trailing the Spartans 36-18. The Spartans only had four more field goals than the Mavs, but outscored UTA at the free throw line 10-0.
MSU continued to use their size under the basketball in the second half, but also found their stroke from the perimeter when Annalise Pickerel drilled three straight shots from beyond the arc. The Spartans shot 76 percent from the floor.
Green led the Mavericks with 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting, Garcia grabbed five rebounds.
"We're going to work on it tomorrow as soon as we get back," Morrow said. "It's got to be a better total team effort."
UTA drops to 0-2 on the season and will face Oral Roberts on Friday, Nov. 16 at 2 p.m. at College Park Center in the home opener. The men's will face Oklahoma later that day at 7 p.m. as part of Homecoming Weekend.
