
WBB: Mavs fall to Denver for first WAC loss

DENVER, Colo. - UT Arlington suffered its first WAC loss of the season after the team fell 90-52 to Denver in Colorado Monday afternoon.
Laila Suleiman led the Mavericks with nine points while Kiara Parker grabbed four rebounds along with her four points for UTA.
UT Arlington shot 34.4 percent from the field while Denver was able to shoot 49.2 percent and remain consistent throughout the game.
Desherra Nwanguma grabbed the first bucket of the game with a hook shot from the left side to start the Mavericks with a lead.
Back-to-back 3-pointers from Denver's leading scorer Morgan Van Riper-Rose tied the game at eight before DU took a brief lead.
The Mavericks (3-9, 1-1 WAC) took a 5-point lead, but the Pioneers fought back to regain the lead with a 3-point play from Ailson Janecek.
Denver (6-7, 1-1 WAC) finished the half in the bonus allowing the Pioneers four points before heading into the locker room with the 48-32 lead.
The Pioneers shot 50 percent in the first half and 5-10 from beyond the arc.
Denver started the second half with an 11-4 early in the second half to give the Pioneers a 59-36 lead.
The Mavericks continued to fight, but Denver was able to put up shots and slow down UTA's offense.
DU continued to shoot from the arc finishing the game with 10 3-pointers accumulating for 30 of their 90 points.
Four of Denver's players finished the game scoring in double figures including Maiya Michel who had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
The Mavericks continue their road trip as they travel to Ruston, Louisiana to take on the Louisiana Tech Techsters Saturday, Jan. 5 at 7 p.m. CST.
