San Marcos, Texas - UT Arlington won its third conference game of the season Saturday against the Texas State Bobcats 61-46.
The Mavericks outscored the Bobcats in the paint, 28-12 while also clenching 28 bench points compared to the Bobcats' seven.
"This makes the last game, where there wasn't much effort, easier to forget. I thought our effort today was one of the top efforts of the season for us," UT Arlington head coach Samantha Morrowsaid. "We had a lot of people come off the bench and for those people to hold the lead was very special."
Texas State started strong when senior Kelsey Krupa knocked down a three for the first possession of the game. The Mavericks answered back with two 3-pointers from sophomore Malaika Green.
The Mavericks controlled the pace for most of the first half of play forcing 17 turnovers from the Bobcats. Despite forcing turnovers, the Mavericks allowed 12 of the Bobcats' points to come from free throws.
UT Arlington headed to the lock room up by two, 30-28 led by Green who had eight points and 3 rebounds.
The second half started off slow with both teams struggling early on. After several lead changes the Mavericks grabbed hold of the lead with a jumper from Bianca Sauls.
The Mavericks defense played a strong role in the game, holding Texas State's leading score Diamond Ford who averaged 19.6 points per game to just nine.
Malaika Green and Briana Walker both finished the game with 14 points each and grabbed a combined 10 rebounds. Desherra Nwangumacame away with 11 rebounds while scoring six points and picking up three steals.
The Mavericks head back home to College Park Center to take on the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
