NATCHITOCHES, La. - The UT Arlington women's tennis team fell in a close battle Wednesday in Natchitoches, La. to the Lady Demons of Northwestern State 4-3.
The last time these two teams met was in the Southland Conference championship where the Mavericks were able to defeat the Lady Demons (10-3, 4-2), but this time the Lady Demons has some late comeback that allowed them to take the victory.
The women (8-7, 4-2) fell early when they lost the doubles point, but play competitive singles action.
Senior Maria Martinez-Romero defeated her opponent Olga Bazhanova at the No. 1 singles spot with a 6-0, 6-3 victory.Four of the six singles competition went to three sets with Northwestern State picking up three of those four tiebreakers.
No. 2 Verena Scott and No. 5 Nikola Matovicoa also won in singles, but it wasn't enough as the Mavericks fell 4-3 in conference play for the second time in row.
"It was another battle that did not fall our way," UT Arlington head coach Diego Benitez said. "We had another match decided in the third set tiebreaker; it can't get closer than that."
