WBB: Mavs Fall in OT to VCU

Nov. 24, 2013

Final Stats

ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington women's basketball fell 74-63 in an overtime loss to VCU Sunday afternoon at College Park Center.

"We kept playing hard," UT Arlington coach Krista Gerlich said. "We need to have great effort on a consistent basis. I'm proud of the way they played in the first 40 minutes. They fought hard and really gave themselves a chance to win."

Senior Desherra Nwanguma grabbed her first double-double of the season with 21 points and 14 rebounds. Freshman Allea Harris started her third game and scored a career-high 19 points while grabbing seven rebounds.

"Desherra was excellent and gave great effort. I thought she was a warrior the whole night and she was a beast inside like we need her to be," Gerlich said.

The Mavericks got off to a 19-9 lead early in the first half, but VCU came back to tie it up and take the lead briefly. Allyson Te'o scored her second bucket of the game at the buzzer to give the Mavs the 33-30 lead at the half.

Harris had the hot hand early in the first half with 11 points, including 2-2 from the arc. Nwanguma was one rebound shy of a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds. This marked the first time since the season open at Houston Baptist that the Mavericks led at the half.

UTA led for most of the second half, but a turnover for the Mavs resulted in a jump shot from the Rams allowing VCU to take the 53-52 lead. VCU saw its biggest lead (57-53) of the game after Isis Thorpe knocked down her third 3-pointer of the game.

With the game tied at 57 with 20.5 seconds on the clock the Mavericks inbounded the ball, but turned the ball over. A wild shot from the Rams left the game tied at regulation.

VCU jumped out to a 10-point lead (70-60) in overtime and the Mavericks couldn't recover as the Rams walked away with the 74-63 win.

The Mavericks are back on the court Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. as they face Abilene Christian at College Park Center.
