TROY, Alabama - UT Arlington volleyball dropped its fifth straight match at Troy on Saturday night. The loss moved the Mavericks to 15-14 overall and 8-8 in the Sun Belt Conference.
"Looking at the stat sheet, we should have won, but Troy played harder than us," UT Arlington coach Diane Seymour said. "A bad first set dictated the night. We have to find it in ourselves to stop the losing before the tournament."
UTA had three players with double-digit kills in the loss to the Trojans. Senior middle blocker Charmaine Whitmore led the way with 13 followed closely by junior Taylor Gross and sophomore Stacey Koch who each had 12 kills. Freshman setter Cassidy Wheeler was the most effective attacker with a .600 attack percentage on the night.
Sophomore defensive specialist Caitlyn Cooney recorded a team-high 24 digs in the match. Whitmore notched her third double-double performance of the season with 13 kills and 10 block assists. Junior setter Amanda Welsh nabbed a double-double of her own, her fifth of the year, with a team-leading 32 assists along with 12 digs. She also had a team-high two aces in the match.
As a team, the Mavs had many ups and downs against Troy. In set two which UTA won 25-13, the Mavericks hit an outstanding .286. However, set four proved to be a different story as UT Arlington fell 25-17 at hit -.024 as a team.
The Mavs will face UL Lafayette on the road Friday at 7 p.m. before wrapping up SBC play at UL Monroe on Saturday at 7 p.m.
