Final Stats
SAN DIEGO, Calif.-The Mavericks fell 3-1 to the Buffalo Bulls in the final day of the San Diego Classic II Sunday, March 17.
"That pitcher threw at the end of the game last time and shut us down," UT Arlington coach Kristie Fox said refereeing to the previous meeting with Buffalo. "We knew she would start and we prepared before the game. The team didn't execute."
Junior pitcher Callie Collins started in the circle for the Mavericks and would fall to 1-7 on the season.
The Mavericks were hitless through the first three innings, but finally got things going in the fourth. Britnea Barilli reached first base on an error the Bull's second baseman. Meagan Michele got a sacrifice bunt to move Barilli to second before Teri Lyles triple to right center to score Barilli and give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead over the Bulls.
The Bulls scored two runs in the top of the fifth when catcher Rachel Forshaw threw the ball to third in an attempt to pick off the runner. The ball went down the left field line and two runners crossed the plate for the 2-1 Buffalo lead. Lyles would move into the pitcher's circle and senior Lauren Siple would catch to relieve the starters with two outs. One more run would score for the Bulls before the Mavs would get out of the inning trailing 3-1.
Buffalo left one runner on with no runs scored no runs scored to keep its 3-1 lead in the seventh inning. The Mavericks needed to score at least two runs to have a chance to win the game. Michele popped out to the third baseman and Lyles popped out to the catcher to start the inning. Siple would strikeout to end the game.
The Mavericks are 15-11 overall and finished 2-3 in the San Diego Classic II. UT Arlington will travel back home to host Baylor Wednesday, March 20 at 5 p.m. at Allan Saxe Field.
