ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington women's basketball was beaten 64-57 by UALR in a hard-fought Sun Belt Conference matchup Saturday night at College Park Center.
"It's a mindset," UT Arlington coach Krista Gerlich said. "It's a mentality and we've got to figure out how to dig deep and believe in ourselves."
The Mavericks dropped to 0-2 in Sun Belt play and 1-12 on the season. The Trojan improved to 6-6 and 1-1.
UT Arlington got off to a quick 9-2 lead. Senior guard Laila Suleiman had a four-point play - a 3-pointer and free throw - in the early surge for the Mavericks.
UALR responded and went on a 20-0 run later in the first half to go into the locker room leading 27-16. Suleiman had seven points at the break, with senior forward Desherra Nwanguma adding six points.
The Trojans carried their momentum into the second half and never relinquished the lead. The Mavericks made it interesting, pulling with 53-48 on junior guard Tahlia Pope's layup.
UT Arlington was led by Nwanguma's 14 points. Suleiman scored 13, and Pope added eight points and six rebounds.
The Mavs return to the court Wednesday as they host UL-Monroe at 7:30 p.m. at College Park Center.
