ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington women's tennis defeated Midwestern State at the UTA Tennis Center Saturday morning. The 7-0 win moved the Mavericks to 1-1 on the season.
"I thought our team competed at a very mature level against a very competitive team," UT Arlington coach Diego Benitez said. "With these new rules, doubles play is pretty much a fast sprint and you have to start very strong, we did that and never looked back."
Elizabeth Thoms won 6-1, 6-3 at the top slot in singles play while Giada D'ortona did not drop a set in her 6-0, 6-0 win at the number two singles spot for the Mavs. Angeles de los Rios (6-4, 6-1), Astrid Gehre (6-2, 6-4), Jessica Birowski (6-2, 6-4) and Ekaterina Tugarinova (6-3, 6-1) all picked up singles wins against Midwestern State.
Thoms and Tugarinova won 6-2 in the No. 1 doubles position. D'ortona and Birowski also won their doubles match 6-1, which made the doubles match for de los Rios and Gehre not necessary as UTA already picked up the win.
The Mavericks return to action Feb. 8 at 10 a.m. against Dallas Baptist and Stephen F. Austin at 2 p.m. at the UTA Tennis Center.
