AUSTIN, Texas - UT Arlington men's tennis fell 6-1 Sunday afternoon to No. 6 Texas at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center in Austin.
Texas took the lead early winning the doubles points to go up 1-0 over the Mavericks. David Holiner and Jacoby Lewis defeated Javier Perez and Carlos Arbiza 8-3 at the No. 1 doubles position. Marek Pesicka and Sebastian Erimicioiu lost 8-5 at the No. 2 doubles spots.
Freshman Pablo Colvee lost 6-2, 6-2 to put the Mavericks down 2-0 at the beginning of singles play. Erimicioiu fell at the No. 4 position 6-3, 6-4 with Mario Muniesa losing 6-4, 6-0 at the No. 5 position to his Texas opponent.
Pesicka was the third Maverick to fall, losing 7-5, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot. Arbiza beat No. 32 George Goldhoff a7-5, 6-4 for the Mavericks' lone point on the day.
"That's the type of match which really increases your confidence and proves to your teammates that we can beat a top-ranked university," Arbiza said.
Freshman Daniel Armengol stayed close at the No. 3 position, but ultimately fell 7-5, 6-4.
"It was a great match for us," UT Arlington coach Diego Benitez said. "We played very hard and it got close in a few matches. I'm very happy for Carlos. He played aggressive and took advantage of the opportunites."
The Mavericks drop to 3-5 on the season, but look to bounce back as they face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Monday at 12 p.m. This Islanders went into Sunday 8-4.
