ARLINGTON, Texas - The UT Arlington women's tennis team was able to overcome a doubles loss to defeat UTSA 4-3 on Thursday at the UTA Tennis Center.

A comeback win by Angeles de los Rios over Isabelle Jonsson proved to be the difference after Rios rebounded from a first-set deficit.

"I am very proud of the overall effort," UT Arlington coach Diego Benitez said. "We started a bit slow and lost the momentum in doubles. We knew we needed it to turn around physically and mentally in singles. I am proud of the way Angeles came back in the second to win and clinch the match."

Rios dropped the opening set 3-6 and was trailing in the second 4-1 before making the turn around. She would win the match 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.

The Mavericks dropped each of the doubles matches, relying on singles to pick up the points to claim the match.

Astrid Gehre defeated Nicole Karaklis in straight sets (7-5, 6-1) and Jessica Birowski did the same with a 6-1, 6-1 win vs. Irene Gandara Gonzalez.

Verena Scott had to go three sets to claim the overall team win, defeating Lina Hallgren 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.

The Mavericks return to the court on March 9 to face their first Sun Belt Conference opponent in UL Monroe in Monroe, La.
