ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington women's tennis improved to 3-1 on the year with victories over Dallas Baptist and Stephen F. Austin at the UTA Tennis Center on Saturday.
"It was a good day for us today," UT Arlington coach Diego Benitez said. "It is also tough to play a doubleheader but we were ready. I'm happy with the level of intensity and focus we had during our matches."
The Mavericks opened up weekend play with a 4-0 win against Dallas Baptist. Astrid Gehre, Ekaterina Tugarinova and Verena Scott did not drop a set as all three went 6-0, 6-0 in singles play. Gehre and Angeles de los Rios recorded a 6-2 win in doubles. Jessica Birowski and Christine Foote won 6-0.
UTA closed out the day with a 7-0 win over Stephen F. Austin. Giada D'ortona earned a 6-4, 6-1 win from the top singles spot. Elizabeth Thoms (6-1, 6-0), de los Rios (6-2, 6-0), Gehre (6-2, 6-3), Birowski (0-6, 6-4, 11-9) and Tugarinova (6-1, 6-0) notched singles victories for the Mavs. Thoms and Tugarinova, as well as Birowski and D'ortona, tallied doubles wins, 7-5 and 7-6, respectively.
UT Arlington will face McNeese State on Sunday at 11 a.m. at the UTA Tennis Center. The Mavericks will look to protect a three-match win streak.
