March 26, 2014

Final Stats

ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington women's tennis defeated crosstown rival SMU 4-3 Wednesday afternoon at the UTA Tennis Center.

The Mavericks improved to 9-7 overall and 6-2 on their home court.

"Doubles was spot on today," UT Arlington coach Diego Benitez said. "In singles we played so well under tough windy conditions. It was a great match for both teams, but we executed the important points in a more efficient way."

Giada D'ortona and Christine Foote won their doubles' point at the No. 3 position to get things started for the Mavericks, but SMU came back to win the next doubles' points at the No. 1 position. Angeles de los Rios and Elizabeth Thoms defeated SMU 8-4 to clinch the doubles point for UT Arlington.

The Mavericks headed into singles competition with a 1-0 lead, but SMU quickly tied the match 1-1, winning the first singles match. De los Rios defeated her opponent in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 to push the Mavericks back into the lead.

UT Arlington continued to push as Thoms and Ekaterina Tugarinova both won singles at the No. 1 and No. 5 positions, respectively, allowing UTA to take down the Mustangs 4-3.

The Mavericks return to the court Wednesday as they face North Texas at 2 p.m. in Denton.
