Sept. 11, 2014 ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington tennis will be well represented at the HEB Corpus Christi Invitational and the Midland Invitational this weekend.
Daniel Echeverry and Carlos Arbiza will participate in men's singles action beginning Friday in Corpus Christi, while Astrid Gehre and Augustina Serio set it off for the women that afternoon. The singles and doubles competition will be conducted Friday through Sunday. The men will play at the HEB Tennis Center, while the women will play at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
Arbiza earned a national ranking last year after defeating the No. 32 player in the nation in straight sets (7-4, 6-4). He finished the season 5-12 overall in singles and 9-5 in doubles. The Venezuelan native will face off against Trey Creysel from Lamar at 2 pm Friday.
Arbiza and Echeverry will then take on UT-Pan American Nikola Crvelin and Alejandro Sanoja in doubles play Friday night at 7pm. Last season Arbiza and Echeverry finished 0-1 in doubles.
Christine Foote and Verena Scott will lead the women's doubles play Friday at 7 p.m. as they take on Incarnate Word's Malisa Vatanadilok and Rachel Sadiq. This is the first time the two are paired together in doubles play. "We hope to go deep in both singles and doubles," UT Arlington coach Diego Benitez said. "We are also trying new partners in doubles play to see how they compete within their games." Serio makes her collegiate debut for the Mavericks this weekend going up against Teodora Stefanovic from Lamar. Gehre, who had the third overall best record last season for the Mavericks at 6-4, will be taking on Mariana Ranzahuer from UT-Pan American Friday at 2 pm.
"The team is eager to get on the court and start competing," Benitez said. "We have had a great week-and-a-half of practice and it is now time to apply the strategies on the court."
