Feb. 11, 2015 ARLINGTON, Texas - The UT Arlington men's and women's tennis team are back in action this week with a full schedule of matches starting with the women taking a trip down to College Station to play Texas A&M Thursday at 2 p.m.
"It's going to be a big weekend for us and a great opportunity to rise in the standings on Thursday," UTA coach
Diego Benitez said. "Playing against a good school like Texas A&M gives us a great chance to make national recognition."
The men and women will then travel down to San Antonio this weekend to compete in two matches apiece. Both teams will start the weekend off against rival UTSA. The men are scheduled to take on the Roadrunners Friday at 2 p.m. followed by the women on Sunday at 11 a.m.
"This is the oldest and most vivid rivalry that we have," Benitez said. "We have been rivals forever and this is the one team on the schedule that we circle because it's always been a great battle. It's going to be a fun weekend."
The men will conclude their weekend good Southern Mississippi on Saturday at 2 p.m. Southern Miss recently swept Alabama State 4-0 after losing to Troy 7-0.
The women will then conclude the weekend Sunday afternoon when they take on Texas-Pan American. The Broncos are coming off a loss against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (6-1).
The Mavericks are going into the week with great momentum after sweeping Dallas Baptist University and Seminole State.
Elizabeth Thoms and
Astrid Gehre look to continue this winning streak going into Thursday's match.
The men were able to bounce back this past weekend after losing to Rice on Feb. 6 to beat Seminole State College 5-1. With help from
Carlos Arbiza and
Sebastian Erimicioiu, they hope to leave San Antonio 2-0.
