ARLINGTON, Texas - The UT Arlington men's and women's tennis teams had a successful weekend at the UTA Tennis Center. The women won both their matches and the men bounced back Saturday after losing to the Rice Owls on Friday.
Competing in their second doubleheader of the season, the UTA women were determined to keep their winning streak alive going into Saturday's matches. They got off to a great start in the morning defeating Dallas Baptist University 6-1 and followed it up with a 4-0 sweep against Seminole State.
Lead by junior Elizabeth Thoms, the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week, the Mavericks were able to take both matches in a timely fashion proving that they are one tough team to beat.
"We're very happy with the level of tennis the girls are playing right now," UT Arlington coach Diego Benitez said. "We are playing intense tennis. The girls are taking care of fundamentals and putting all the wins together is definitely helping their confidence. It is great to enter this upcoming week with high confidence."
The men started the weekend off a little rocky after losing their first away match to Rice 4-0. Determined to come back, they entered the UTA Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon ready for Seminole State College and swept them 4-0.
"The guys played really well after losing to a very good team Friday night," Benitez said. "I was very pleased with the way they handled the match mentally and how they handled all the factors around them. We were able to stay focused against a good team and I'm happy that we were able to put that win on our column."
The men and women have an exciting week ahead of them. The women will take on Texas A&M in College Station on Thursday and then both teams will head to San Antonio to take on rival UTSA.
