CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Junior Mario Muniesa's run into the semi finals highlighted UT Arlington in its play in the Marco & Co. Catering Islanders Open held by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
"I was very proud of our guys this weekend," UT Arlington graduate assistant Luis Grangeiro said. "They came with the mindset to fight hard every match and every point and the results today favorite us. It is good to see that they were able to start the fall season with good results."
Muniesa's tournament opened with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over UTSA's Christian Carillo before he disposed of UT-Rio Grand Valley's Juan Cruz Soria (6-4, 3-6, 10-7) in the quarterfinals. Muniesa fell in the semi finals against top-seeded Ricardo Mayagoitia from AMCC.
Pablo Colvee defeated UTSA's Ricardo Gonzalez in the first round 6-2, 6-0 before he lost to UT-RGV's Kobe Jensen 6-3, 6-4.
In doubles, Muniesa was joined with Carlos Arbiza. The pair went into the semi finals after defeating a pair for UT-RGV 8-3 in the opener. However, UTA lost in the second to a team from Incarnate Word.
The UT Arlington men continue the season this Friday as they travel to the Midland Fall Invitational.
