ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington tennis heads west for its second tournament of the season as the Mavericks compete in the Midland Fall Invitational in a three-day event.
UT Arlington coach Diego Benitez will be sending his full squad from the men's side to compete after just three opened the season in Corpus Christi, while four will represent the women's side.
"It is going to be good," Benitez said. "This tournament is always really strong. It is an invitational tournament and we are fortunate to be invited every year. It is going to be another really tough tournament with a tough pool of schools. That is what we need, to be playing against the best competition."
Schools represented in the Invitational that join UTA are Texas Tech, Rice, TCU, Tulsa, Penn State, North Texas, UAB, Abilene Christian and Lamar.
For junior Angeles de los Rios, the first tournament of the season always brings nerves that she is ready to shake off.
"I just want to try to take off the pressure," de los Rios said. "Last year I did pretty good in this tournament so it depends on the draw. I just want to take the nerves out in the first tournament. I want to get into the groove and get some rhythm."
De los Rios will be paired with Astrid Gehre in the doubles draw, while Elizabeth Thoms and Jessica Birowski will play together. On the men's side, Mario Muniesa and Carlos Arbiza join together with Jhonathan Gonzalez and Daniel Armengol competing as the second team.
