ARLINGTON, Texas - More than one year later, the UT Arlington women's tennis team has yet to feel defeat in Arlington. The Mavericks improved their home winning streak to 16 after a 5-2 win over Sam Houston State on Sunday at the UTA Tennis Center.

"Our team enjoys playing at home in front of their home crowd and it's a bit of extra motivation for them to do very well here," UT Arlington coach Diego Benitez said. "We've tried to keep the momentum and build our practices around it to make sure we're ready for our upcoming matches in Florida."

UTA (4-0) packs its bags for the first road matches of the spring season this weekend. The Mavericks make a stop in Orlando to face UCF at 12 p.m. CT Saturday. Florida International closes the trip 12 p.m. CT Sunday in Miami.

The Mavs quickly swept the doubles point to start their day with high energy. Astrid Gehre and Jessica Birowski set the tone with a 6-1 victory. Angeles de los Rios was paired with Luxizi Meng for the first time this season, but had no trouble adjusting as the team won 6-3 in the No. 2 position.

Augustina Serio and Valeria Lopez finished shortly after, also on the right side of a 6-3 decision.

The momentum transferred over to singles play as UTA clinched the overall match in its first three matches played. De los Rios (2-0) made quick work of Sam Houston 6-2, 6-1 in the first singles match completed.

Serio earned her fourth win of the season 6-2, 6-2. Thoms defended the No. 1 position 6-1, 6-3 to move to 3-0 on the year. Birowski has yet to lose this season as her 6-3, 6-3 performance marks her fourth win in a row.

Freshmen Meng and Lopez both rounded out the day with losses. Meng was defeated 6-2, 6-2. Lopez battled through three sets, but eventually came up short 6-4, 6-4, 11-9.
