ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington completed the upset of No. 45 New Mexico on Saturday to keep its home winning streak alive.
The Mavericks (8-1) pushed their streak at the UTA Tennis Center to 19 matches after the 4-3 decision against the Lobos.
"It was a really big match for us today," UT Arlington coach Diego Benitez said. "I am extremely proud of the girls and the way they came out with determination to play their best tennis. We really fought them to the end and credit to New Mexico, they never gave up."
UTA came out of the gates swinging in doubles, earning an early point in the match. Angeles de los Rios and Elizabeth Thoms won 6-1 in No. 1 doubles, while Valeria Lopez and Agustina Serio battled to a 6-4 victory at No. 3.
Singles proved to be much closer as the teams went back and forth. De los Rios and Serio each took victories in two sets, leaving the Mavs needing just one point to clinch the win.
The final point was left to Lopez at the No. 6 position. Lopez fell in a tightly contested opening set 7-6 before making her rally. The freshman took Set 2 in commanding fashion 6-1, before completing the comeback in a 6-4 third-set victory.
Benitez attributed the success to the work the team had done on their mental game leading up to the match.
"The girls did an amazing job mentally," he said. "We have been working on that lately and I really saw the difference today when we dealt with adversity. We were able to maintain focus and stick with our big game.
"It was what I wanted to see in the mental game. We were able to play the bigger points with more determination and focus."
Ending its three-game homestand, UTA travels to crosstown rival No. 52 TCU on Monday at 5:30 p.m.
