GOLD RIVER, Calif. - UT Arlington men's tennis finished the 2016 Golden State Invitational 2-1 after rallying to a strong finish on Sunday.

The Mavericks (12-6) pushed their winning streak to five matches with a win in the opening round against Saint Mary's. However, UTA fell to Portland for its first loss of the month in the semifinals against Portland. The Mavs rallied in the consolation final to sweep Nevada to close out play.

"It was a good tournament for us," UT Arlington coach Diego Benitez said. "It was nice to play teams we do not usually play, with different styles. I like the way our team competed, especially physically, playing three tough matches in a row."

UTA opened up play with a 4-1 decision against Saint Mary's. The newly nationally ranked pair of Jhonathan Gonzalez and Daniel Armengol (No. 62 in the nation) picked up a 6-4 to help lift UTA to the doubles point. Gonzalez joined the singles groups of Guanarteme Nuez and Carlos Arbiza in pick up points in singles play.

The second round proved a tougher match for UTA as it took on Portland, who was coming off consecutive wins against ranked teams. Gonzalez and Arbiza stayed perfect in picking up singles wins, however, it was not enough in a 4-2 loss.

The Mavericks concluded the weekend with a decisive victory over Mountain West foe Nevada. Armengol and Nuez won 6-1 in No. 3 doubles, while Gonzalez was joined with Maruicio Del Rio in a 6-3 win in the No. 2 position.

Gonzalez improved to 3-0 in singles play over the weekend with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 decision in No. 1 singles. He was joined by Nuez and Arbiza in singles victories to wrap up the points.

The Mavs return to regular match play when they begin a four-match homestand on Tuesday against Columbia. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the UTA Tennis Center.
