DALLAS - UT Arlington women's tennis edged Penn 4-3 Tuesday morning at the SMU Tennis Complex.

The Mavericks improved to 7-1 on the season. UTA and Penn moved the match indoors to the SMU Tennis Center. Angeles de los Rios (5-0) and Agustina Serio (6-0) remained perfect with singles wins.

A dominant effort in singles play captured the Mavs' win, but Penn wasn't willing to give those points up without a fight. Three of UTA's four points were each contested in three sets.

"The girls just really fought against adversity," UT Arlington coach Diego Benitez said. "They never looked back, they never gave up and it says a lot of about the identity of this team.

"We were one match point down and little by little were able to add more points to the board. I'm extremely proud of the girls. This is a really big boost of confidence for the upcoming home matches and ultimately going to New Orleans."

Elizabeth Thoms picked up her second win of the season in the No. 2 position with a 7-6, 3-6, 6-4 decision. De los Rios lost her first set 5-7, but moved through the final two 7-5, 6-2. Astrid Gehre had the same result and trailed after the opening set before settling down 6-2, 6-4. Serio was the only Maverick to win a singles match in two sets (7-5, 6-3).

No. 1 Birowski was downed 6-2, 6-2, and Valeria Lopez fell 6-3, 6-3.

UTA couldn't capture the doubles point for just the second match this season as Penn earned 6-2 wins in the No. 1 and 2 positions. Serio and Lopez were the only pair to defeat the Quakers 6-1. The duo is now 5-0 in doubles matches this season.

The Mavs return to the UTA Tennis Center to face New Mexico at 2 p.m. Saturday.
