BestOf15-16: Mendoza's record-breaking season

June 30, 2016

By Brooke Ortale | UTAMavs.com

ARLINGTON, Texas - The UT Arlington sports year was filled with upsets, championships, buzzer-beaters and memorable performances that will go down in Maverick history.

Leading up to the 2016-17 seasons beginning with UTA volleyball in August UTA Athletics is making sure we do not forget the accomplishments of the past season. Running from June through August, we will be counting down the top-15 moments and performances with "Best of 2015-16" features.

Moment No. 11: Mendoza's record-breaking season
UTA second baseman Sandra Mendoza put together one of the best seasons in UT Arlington softball history, breaking UTA's single-season hits (76) and batting average record (.461).

Mendoza etched her name into history with a 4-for-5 performance in the final home game of the season. The four hits sent her by Katie Jones' mark set in 2007 with 71.

"It is awesome and really good for the program, I could not have done it without the girls," Mendoza said after the game. "They put me in situations where it is a team win all the time. We go through this together and we work hard every day."

The record-breaking quest came to fruition behind a 17-game hitting streak to open the year, and an 18-game streak in the back half as she hit .461 to obliterate the single-season batting average mark, also owned previously by Jones in 2007 at .417.

Not only does Mendoza now sit atop the Mavs' single-season hits and batting average list, but the Eagle Pass, Texas native finished the year with 15 doubles, good for a tie for fifth on the single-season doubles list. Her 19 extra-base hits put her in a tie for sixth on UTA's single-season extra-base hits list. As the Mavericks leadoff hitter, she led the team in RBI, placing her sixth on the Mavs single-season RBI list.

To go along with her UTA records she set, Mendoza also ranked amongst the nations best in many offensive categories. She finished the season 10th in Division I in batting average, 25th in on-base percentage (.528), 48th in triples per game (0.08) and 54th in doubles per game (0.31).

Mendoza was awarded for her dominant season, garnering all-Sun Belt Conference first team honors in addition to becoming only the third Maverick to be named to an NFCA All-Region team, receiving Second-Team All-Central Region honors.
