Postgame Quotes
UTA Head Coach Scott Cross
Thoughts on first win of the season
"We're thankful for the victory, I thought Loyola Marymount played hard and they did because the rebound numbers show that. Thats an area of concern for us where we have to get better and address it in practice and the guys are gonna have to buy in. We're gonna have to be tough as a basketball team. Beautiful thing about it is that we still got a win out of it. Definitely gonna have to thank the good lord for that. It's a learning curve for this group and hopefully we get better. We have a week basically before we play again and we'll be better next Saturday when we play BYU."
On Hervey's performance:
"He carried us offensively. He's a big time player, he can score the basketball about as good as any player i've coached. He's smart with the basketball he makes good passes, makes good decisions, got a knack for rebounding. He had a couple of big offensive rebounds for us that I thought changed the game as well. In certain areas, especially offense, he carried us tonight."
On playing against LMU's zone defense:
"It's hard playing zone early in the season because you haven't seen it a whole lot and your busy working on man-to-man. They had a good game plan coming into this game and they knew we were were pretty good with transition into man-to-man. We did prepare and work on zone but it's only something you work on for %15 of the whole because we're focusing on man-to-man that we see most of season."
On the impact of the crowd:
"The crowd was awesome especially at the stretch when it gave us a big boost. Once we were able to get a couple of stops and put backs in transition. They were extremely loud and definitely spurred all of our guys and saw a bit more energy there late in the second-half and thats what we need."
Senior Guard Erick Neal
How teammate DJ Bryant compliments him:
"I love it, he picks me up, I pick him up. We're interchangeable. If he's in I think we're doing good."
On being a scorer and facilitator:
"Sometimes I just confused on when to score and when to kick it or take another dribble, or pull it out. There just comes a time."
Kevin Hervey Senior Forward Kevin Hervey
On his scoring ability:
"I put a lot of work in this summer. Now it's just time to show everybody how much work I put in."
On the ball movement:
"I've been trying to work on moving the ball and finding open spots. We got a different group of guys. Kaelon is in the starting lineup for the first time, Nate the same way, Johnny's a newcomer so he's still got room to grow, we got a lot of potential."
On the impact of the crowd towards the end of the game:
"Having a great crowd is an energy booster when you hit a big shot. We got on a run and it helps out with the crowd behind you with that encouragement."
On down the stretch whose calling for the ball:
"I'm the type of guy that even whenever it's a big moment, we try to get the best shot. Whether that's me taking it, or Erick, anybody on the team can really step in and take it. We"re just trying to swing the ball and hit the open man."
