LONG BEACH, Calif. - Agustina Serio was a bright spot for UTA as the team gained experience ahead of its Sun Belt opener on the west coast this week
Despite dropping a pair of matches, Serio stretched her singles winning streak to seven matches in singles before falling in a battle against Long Beach State. UTA fell 4-1 to Fresno State and 4-3 to Long Beach State during the trip.
"I am very pleased of the performance of the girls in California," UTA coach Diego Benitez said. "Overall we played very good competition and have to work on a few details in our game to make sure we can excel in the pressure points. I am happy that we competed against a tough team. I am pleased with both matches and it sets up a good scenario before we start playing conference matches."
The Mavericks were unable to get on the right side of a closely contested match to open the trek at Fresno State. Dropping a doubles point, four singles matches went into the third sets. Agustina Serio picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 3 to give UTA its lone point of the match.
UTA built up a 3-1 advantage against Long Beach State before the hosts made a comeback. Astrid Gehre and Ann Wichert won 6-2 at No. 2 doubles, while Serio and Valeria Lopez was 7-5 at No. 3.
Carla Cerdan Vives and Jessica Birowski each picked up three-set wins in singles. But UTA was unable to be on the right side of two of the remaining matches that went into the third set.
