ARLINGTON, Texas - Strong play in singles lifted UTA to a 4-1 win over Georgia State on Saturday at the UTA Tennis Center.
The Mavericks (7-5) used a 7-5 win from Astrid Gehre and Anna Wichert in doubles to claim the point, and took three singles matches in two sets to down Georgia State in the team's SBC opener.
"We came from a good trip in California in which we got better in a lot of different things to a good match on Saturday," UTA coach Diego Benitez said. "The doubles point was key, we won the first pretty easily and then it came down to No. 2, we were down a break and able to come back. I am proud of the effort of the girls in the singles and our freshman and sophomore in putting points on the board. Our senior Jessica finished the job in the clincher. We just have to relax and get ready for tomorrow."
UTA returns back to the court on Sunday when it welcomes Kansas State to the UTA Tennis Center.
Agustina Serio and Valeria Lopez cruised to a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles to join the No. 2 tandem with doubles wins.
Carla Cerdan Vives continue to have a hot swing as she downed her opponent 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6, shortly followed by Wichert's 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 5.
Senior Jessica Birowski closed out the match at No. 4 as she also cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 win.
