JONESBORO, Ark. - UTA women's tennis remained perfect in Sun Belt play as it swept Arkansas State on Friday at the A-State Tennis Complex in a four-team pod hosted by the Red Wolves.
The 4-0 victory improved the Mavericks to 2-0 in Sun Belt play and 8-6 overall for the season. Senior Astrid Gehre combined with Anna Wichert for one of the team's two doubles wins. The victory for Gehre moved the Asuncion, Paraguay native to third in UTA's all-time doubles win charts with 74. Gehre is just two wins away from tying Marie Stepanova for second. Gehre and Wichert are 14-0 when playing as a tandem in dual play this season.
"We played very consistent doubles and carried the momentum into singles," UTA coach Diego Benitez said. "I am glad of the team effort and the way we handled the elements. It was a very tricky wind today."
Gehre also picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win in singles to move within one of UTA's all-time Top-10 charts as she has 63 victories.
Joining Gehre and Wichert in a doubles win, Agustina Serio and Valeria Lopez also made quick work of their match, earning a 6-2 win at No. 3. Serio took a 6-0, 6-0 decision at No. 3 to improve to 10-1 in dual match play and perfect at the No. 3 spot.
Rounding out the day's competition, Carla Cerdan Vives improved to 6-3 in dual play with a win at No. 6.
UTA continues play in the pod on Saturday when it takes on ULM at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.
