HOUSTON - The Mavericks picked up an impressive doubles win against No. 47 Rice, but couldn't have the same success as the Owls took a 4-1 win on Wednesday at the Galleria Tennis and Athletic Club.
UTA picked up a featured win from its doubles tandems on No. 2 and No. 3 courts. Astrid Gehre and Anna Wichert improved to 15-0 as a team in dual play with a 6-3 victory over No. 79 Alison Ho and Priya Niezgoda. Agustina Serio and Valeria Lopez downed their opponent 6-3 to claim the point. Gehre moved just one doubles win away from tying for second all-time in wins.
Singles didn't go as smooth for the Mavericks (8-6). Rice (10-5) picked up straight-set matches on courts two through four, as well as a win at No. 6. The Owls sent two nationally ranked singles players into matches. Angeles de los Rios battled against No. 98 Lindsey Hodge, falling in a tiebreak 10-8 in the first set, leaving the match unfinished. Wichert also was a positive for UTA as she won her first set 6-3, before falling 7-5 in the second in an unfinished match.
UTA continues its road swing with a trip to Dallas when it takes on SMU on Saturday.
