NEW ORLEANS - The Maverick women's tennis team had its hopes of a conference title cut short by Georgia State in a 4-3 loss in the Sun Belt Championship quarterfinals on Friday.
UTA concludes its campaign with a 11-10 record, while Georgia State advanced to the semifinals and moved to 13-8 overall. The Panthers win avenged a 4-1 UTA victory earlier in the season at the UTA Tennis Center.
The room for error was razor thin in doubles as it took the teams getting the seventh game in all three matches. Jessica Birowski and Angeles de los Rios claimed No. 1 doubles with a 7-5 score, but UTA was on the other end of a tiebreak at No. 2 and 3 as UTA fell 7-6.
De los Rios quickly got the match tied in singles play as she completed her historic UTA career with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1. Georgia State pushed two points with wins on No. 6 and then No. 2 befure UTA was able to battle back.
Agustina Serio used the momentum of a first-set tiebreak to power a 6-2 set in the second to claim a point at No. 3. Anna Wichert swept a 6-0 score in the third set at No. 5 to put the match tied at 3-3.
All eyes then turned to a battle at No. 4. Birowski rallied from behind to take a second set and force the deciding third, however, she ran out of steam as Georgia State took the third 6-1.
