ARLINGTON, Texas - UTA welcomed more than 70 local track and field coaches to Maverick Stadium Saturday for the DFW/UTA Track & Field Clinic. Attendees learned from those who have won high school state championship teams, coached college conference championship teams, and tutored all-state and All-American athletes.
The clinic featured lectures and demonstrations from some of the area's most successful and respected high school and college coaches. Sprints, distance, hurdles, relays, jumps and throws were all covered by experts in their respective event areas.
"We try to be good stewards to the sport," UTA coach John Sauerhage said. "It's always great to talk track, and I think everyone benefitted from it, from the attendees to our presenters. It was a very positive experience."
The clinic's founder, John McKenzie, spoke to the group. Other featured speakers included Texas UIL state champion coaches Justin Leonard of Southlake Carroll and Kendrick Crumedy of Manvel.
The UTA staff of Sauerhage, associate head coach Brandon Berger, associate women's head coach Jordan Durham and assistant coaches Tyrone Edgar and John Ridgway organized the clinic's festivities.
The all-day Saturday sessions provided coaches with hands-on, on-site training at Maverick Stadium, the home of the UTA track and field and cross country programs. UTA has won 31 conference team championships under Sauerhage since 1995.
"It's always nice to have high school coaches on our campus," Sauerhage said. "We hope this clinic will get everyone ready for the season and motivated to coach their teams and to try to make a difference with their student-athletes."
