CARROLLTON, Texas – Looking to make progress in the middle event of its fall schedule, the UT Arlington men's golf team remains in the DFW area this weekend when the Mavericks compete in North Texas's inaugural Maridoe Intercollegiate at Maridoe Golf Club.
Â
The 54-hole tournament – the first UNT has ever hosted – commences Saturday morning with first-round tee times off the 1st and 10th holes. UTA will be paired with a duo of SEC members in Texas A&M and Tennessee, going off the 10th in 10-minute increments from 8:30-9:10.
Â
Second-round action will take place on Sunday, and final-round play will occur on Monday – with both rounds beginning with tee-time starts off 1 and 10 at 8:30 a.m. Sunday and 8 a.m. Monday.
Â
Pairings and live scoring will be available all tournament via Golfstat by clicking here or by visiting the link accompanying this release. Additionally, updates will be posted on the official Twitter account of the program @UTAMavsGolf.
Â
The Mavs' five-man lineup will feature the following quintet at the par-70, 7,043-yard layout which just opened for play in July of last year:
Â
1) Paul Gonzalez
2) Kyle Cox
3) Tanner Gore
4) Caleb Hicks
5) Zakary Jones
Â
That lineup features four of the same five golfers who teed it up last weekend at New Mexico's William H. Tucker Intercollegiate, with the lone exception being Jones. The freshman from Spring, Texas, will be making his collegiate debut. Jones – ranked in the top 15 among all junior golfers in the state as senior – was a four-time all-district performer at Klein Collins High School.
Â
Fellow freshman Cox led the Mavericks last weekend with rounds of 74-74-72 (220), making significant progress from his first collegiate tournament when he posted a pair of 78s in the rain-shortened event. Gonzalez was just one stroke off Cox's pace with a 221 (75-76-70), with the final-round 70 matching Gore for the team's lowest of the young season. The sophomore leads UTA through its first two events in scoring average with a 73.60.
Â
With a trio of par-or-better rounds this weekend, Gore has a chance to join a list of just 11 former UTA men's golfers who have reached 30 career such rounds. The senior also recently moved into the top 10 in program history for career birdies with 257, and with at least four this weekend will move into sole possession of 8th place on a list topped by Bobby Massa (2006-10) with 387.
Â
Hicks – a third freshman in the UTA lineup this weekend – also made significant progress from his collegiate debut last weekend in Albuquerque with a 223 total (75-74-74). The 2nd-round 74 tied for the best in the lineup, and the three rounds each matched – or bettered – his career-opening performances at the UTSA Lone Star Invitational.
Â
The 14-team field this weekend features several in-state and national foes, including SMU, Houston, Rice, UTSA, Texas A&M, Tennessee and Indiana. Coastal Carolina and Arkansas State are also in the field representing the Sun Belt Conference, in addition to North Florida, New Mexico and Boise State.
Â
Following action this weekend, the Mavs will have a week break from competitive action – their only week off in a five-week stretch – before returning to the course at the Little Rock Invitational Oct. 22-23.
