MONROE, La. - Down 3-1 with three singles matches going into the third set, UT Arlington women's tennis pulled out the comeback to top ULM 4-3 on Friday in Sun Belt play.
The Mavericks (6-6, 2-1 SBC) seemed to be out of the match with all six singles matches going in favor of ULM in the first set. Singles play at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 ended in two sets, but UTA rallied in the final matches to nip the Warhawks.
"I am really proud of the girls and the fight that we showed today," UTA coach Diego Benitez said. "We never gave up in a match that we were down in. We battled back and were able to pull out the win. I am happy with today's result and am looking forward to us carrying into our next match against Arkansas State.
While singles was where UTA earned the win, the crucial point came from the doubles side to get things going. Agustina Serio and Anna Wichert were able to make quick work of the No. 1 matchup, taking it 6-3. UTA fell at No. 2 6-2 as all eyes turned to the No. 3 match. Carla Cerdan Vives and Almudena Boza pulled it out in a battle in a tiebreak to get the opener.
ULM battled to take a 3-1 lead, but the rally started as momentum turned. Losing first sets at No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 by scores of 1-6, 1-6 and 0-6 respectively, UTA stormed through the five and six with 6-2 and 6-0 wins. Both Lucia Natal and Cerdan Vives took their third sets by a 6-3 score to even the match.
Momoka Horiguchi battled to a 7-5 second set, and then took the match clincher with a 6-3 score.
