ARLINGTON, Texas -- A pair of runs in the eighth innings broke a scoreless game and lifted ULM to a 2-0 win over UTA baseball in the series finale on Sunday at Clay Gould Ballpark.
UTA (13-12, 6-3 Sun Belt Conference) was locked in a scoreless pitching duel until a pair of one-out walks and a double steal set up a two-run rally for ULM. UTA was able to load the bases with an out in the bottom of the eighth but couldn't muster a key run-scoring hit.
LEADING THE MAVS
The Mavs were handcuffed by ULM pitching in the game, collecting singles from David Renning, Aaron Funk and Christian Hollie.
ON THE MOUND
UTA starter Ka'ikpeono Anderson worked 5.2 shutout innings, allowing five hits and one walk, striking out five. After a two-out walk in the sixth, Ryan Buss (1-1) came on to strand the runner. Buss retired five of the seven hitters he faced, issuing a pair of walks, before handing the ball to David Moffat with a pair of runners on and one out. A sac fly and a RBI single dented Buss' line in the eighth.
ULM (15-11, 4-5 Sun Belt) starter Derek Martin (0-0) worked 5.2 shutout innings, allowing just a hit, walk and hit batter, striking out three. ULM used Miles Dunn (3-0) to escape the sixth inning and Dunn retired four of five hitters faced. Keegan Curtis took over in the eighth and earned his fourth save of the year.
NEXT
The Mavs will return to action on Tuesday, traveling to face Abilene Christian at 6:30 p.m. CT.
HOW THEY SCORED
ULM got on the board in the top of the eighth inning, getting a pair of one-out walks to chase Buss. After a double steal pushed both runners into scoring position with one out, Johnny DeLaCruz scored Brian Barefoot with a sac fly. Turner Francis then singled through the right side to score Joey Jordan.
