FORT WORTH, Texas -- TCU plated six runs in the first two innings to post a 6-5 win over UTA baseball, on Tuesday night at Lupton Stadium.
UTA (15-16) fell behind after allowing a four-run first inning for the Frogs and a two-run second. The Mavs opened the game with a single run in the first inning and got a run back in the fifth. In the eighth, the Mavs rallied with three and got the tying run into scoring position to cut the lead to one.
LEADING THE MAVS
Junior catcher Will Olson earned a team-high three hits, with Christian Hollie, David Renning and Zac Cook each adding two hits. Cook and Hollie each doubled with Renning collecting two two baggers.
ON THE MOUND
UTA freshman starter Cody Wernli (0-1) made his fourth start of the year, facing five hitters, who each reached, with four scoring. Jordon West came on in relief with the bases juiced without an out in the first, working the best outing of his career. West fired a career-long seven innings, allowing five hits and two runs, walking one and striking out a career-high seven. Freshman David Moffat came on to work the eighth inning.
TCU (16-13) freshman lefty Russell Smith (1-2) made the start, working four innings, allowing one run and five hits, walking two and striking out three. Caleb Sloan opened the fifth in relief and worked two innings, before Haylen Green came on in the seventh, allowing a pair of hits to open the eighth after a shutout seventh. Cal Coughlin and Augie Mihlbauer worked in the eighth. Durbin Feltman worked the ninth to earn the save, his fourth of the year.
NEXT
The Mavs will return to action on Wednesday, hosting No. 26 Sam Houston State at 6:30 p.m. CT at Clay Gould Ballpark. UTA will start junior righty Reid Petty (0-1, 13.50 ERA) in his second start of the year. The game will be broadcast live on UTAMavs.com, with the Voice of the Mavs, Josh Sours, calling the action.
HOW THEY SCORED
Cook opened the game by getting plunked by the first pitch of the inning. After a fly out, Olson lined a single up the middle to push Cook to scoring position. Hollie followed with a single through the right side, allowing Cook to score from second with a headfirst slide.
The Frogs immediately responded, loading the bases without an out, getting a bases-loaded walk from A.J. Balta and an RBI single through the right side from Michael Landsestoy. Johnny Rize scored a third TCU run with a single through the right side. Adam Oviedo followed and legged out the back end of a double play to score a fourth run.
TCU added to its lead in the bottom of the second inning, getting a leadoff infield single from Colton Parrish before Josh Watson pulled an RBI triple down the line. Landestoy delivered a two-out hit into centerfield to score Watson for a 6-1 TCU lead.
UTA cut into the lead in the top of the fifth inning, getting a leadoff walk from Minjarez and a single from Will Olson through the left side. Nunez hung a sac fly that was dropped in rightfield, allowing Minjarez to score.
In the eighth inning, UTA got a leadoff runner on after an error and a double from Cook. Minjarez then fought off a two-strike pitch to score Boone Montgomery from third. Hollie ripped his eighth double of the year down the leftfield line, scoring Cook to cut the lead to 6-4. Hollie came around to score on a throwing error to cut the lead to one.
