BSB: Mavs Edge No. 23 Sam Houston State

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Josh Minjarez had three hits and Daniel James earned his 19th career save with the final four outs, leading UTA baseball to a 4-3 win over No. 23 Sam Houston State, on Wednesday night at Clay Gould Ballpark.

UTA (16-16) posted its fifth one-run win of the season, outlasting Sam Houston (23-10) behind a strong pitching performance. UTA plated a run in the third and three runs in the fourth and fought off a three-run rally from the Bearkats in the eighth inning to take the win.

LEADING THE MAVS
Minjarez led the Mavs offensively, going 3-for-4, with Noah Vaughan collecting a pair of hits with an RBI. Zac Cook, Jakob Nunez, Will Olson, David Renning and Boone Montgomery each had hits.

ON THE MOUND
UTA starter Reid Petty (1-1) worked a pre-determined three shutout innings, allowing three walks without a hit, striking out two on 43 pitches. Junior lefty Drew Gooch worked a shutout fourth, junior righty Dylan Schneider tossed a shutout fifth, working around a hit and walk with a pair of strikeouts. Logan Austin opened the sixth inning and worked two innings, allowing three hits and one run, walking one and striking out three. After a leadoff walk in the eighth, UTA used Ryan Buss, who walked two -- with both coming around to score -- before Andrew Gross retired a pair in the frame.

With the tying run in scoring position in the eighth inning, James came on in relief, stranding the run at third. James worked his third save of the year, getting the final four outs of the game. James has 19 career saves, moving him into third place in UTA career history.

Sam Houston State starter Riley Gossett (2-1) worked 3.1 innings, allowing six hits and four runs -- three earned -- walking one and striking out one. Dominic Robinson escaped a fourth-inning jam and worked 2.1 innings, allowing three hits and one walk, striking out two before giving way to Landon Ausley in the sixth. Ausley escaped the jam and recorded two strikeouts with two walks. Riley Cooper also worked in relief in the seventh, getting three outs before giving way to Dakota Mills in the eighth.

NEXT
The Mavs will return to action on Friday with a three-game series opener at 6:30 p.m. CT vs. Arkansas State. The game will be broadcast live on UTAMavs.com, with the Voice of the Mavs, Josh Sours, calling the action.

HOW THEY SCORED
The Mavs opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning, getting a high-hoping double down the leftfield line from Montgomery to open the frame. After an Easton Johnson sacrifice bunt, Cook scored Montgomery with a sac fly to right.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Mavs extended their lead with three runs on three hits. Hollie led off by reaching on a throwing error on a grounder up the middle and Nunez pushed him to third with a single into the gap. Vaughan followed with a single on an 0-2 offering through the right side, scoring Hollie. Renning then gave UTA a 3-0 lead with a single pushed through the right side, scoring Nunez from second and pushing Vaughan to third. After a walk from Montgomery loaded the bases, Johnson grounded out to the right side to allow Vaughan to score.

In the eighth inning, Sam Houston State rallied. Jaxxon Grisham led of with a four-pitch walk and Ben Hafner greeted Buss with a walk. Hunter Hearn then lofted a fly ball to rightfield that was dropped, allowing Grisham to motor home from second. A wild pitch and a balk allowed two more runs to score for the Bearkats.
