Mavericks set for Charlie Thomas Invitational Friday and Saturday
ARLINGTON, Texas (Jan. 31, 2019) – For the third time in the past month, the UTA men's and women's track teams will compete in a high-profile in-state meet when the squads return to Texas A&M for the Charlie Thomas Invitational this weekend.
Â
The Mavericks opened the 2019 indoor campaign in College Station on Jan. 12 and also competed last weekend in Lubbock. UTA will return to Texas Tech on Feb. 8-9 to close the indoor regular season, meaning four of its five meets will have taken place in the Lone Star State.
Â
"These meets feature both great facilities and tremendous competition," UTA coach John Sauerhage said. "We've had a strong start to the season and are looking to keep it going this weekend. This is our next step as we close in on the conference meet."
Â
UTA has enjoyed success in the early going, boasting four of the men's six Sun Belt Conference Athletes of the Week thus far. In addition, the Mavericks have 10 men currently ranked in the league's top three in their respective events as well as seven women listed among the SBC's top five.
Â
Nationally, six Mavs are currently in the NCAA's top 75. Erik Martinsson leads the way, ranking ninth in the 800 meters after his school-record performance last week (1:48.45). Others in the top 50 include: David Seastrunk in the 400m (45th, 47.47) and Victor Fincher in the 60m hurdles (45th, 7.93).
Â
Rounding out those ranked among the nation's elite are Darius Prescott in the triple jump (55th, 49-8 ½), Deontre Haynes in the 60m (55th, 6.76) and Isaiah McBride in the 60m (65th, 6.78)
Â
For the women, Juleen Lewis ranks inside the top 75 in a pair of events, as she is 54th in the long jump (19-8) and 63rd in the triple jump (40-7 ½). Meanwhile, Alexus Henry sits in the 25th position in the high jump (5-9 ¾).
Â
In addition to UTA, the other teams competing in College Station include: Arkansas (women), Cincinnati, Houston, Rice, South Plains, Stephen F Austin, TCU, Texas, Texas A&M and UTSA.
Â
The meet begins Friday with the multi-events at 2:30 p.m. Henry, the pentathlon school record holder (3,895 points) and reigning conference champion, will be competing for the first time this season. In all, the Mavericks will have four individuals in the women's pentathlon, which will be completed on Friday, and two in the men's heptathlon, which starts Friday and will wrap up Saturday. Friday evening action includes the women's and men's 5000 meters.
Â
The rest of the meet will take place on Saturday. Following the heptathlon in the morning (10:30 a.m.), individual events on the track and in the field begin at 12:30 p.m. Live scoring both days will be available at Flash Results. On Saturday, a live broadcast will be on SECN+.
