10/13/2019 11:30:00 AM | Men's Golf
JONESBORO, Ark. – Looking to keep its strong play going, the UT Arlington men's golf team returns to action Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 14-15, at Arkansas State's Bubba Barnett Intercollegiate from RidgePointe Country Club.
UTA commenced its 2019-20 season by being co-champions of the UTSA Lone Star Invitational last month before posting an incredible 18-under performance last week at Colorado's Mark Simpson Invitational – representing the 2nd-best score to par in program history.
The Mavs will utilize the exact same lineup which has brought them success in their first two events of the year as they look to keep that momentum going:
1) Paul Gonzalez
2) Caleb Hicks
3) Kyle Cox
4) Daniel Cronje
5) Zakary Jones
The tournament will begin with 36 holes of continuous play on Monday with an 8:15 a.m. shotgun start before concluding on Tuesday with the final round. Live scoring will be available via Golfstat by following the link attached to this release or by clicking here.
In addition to UTA and fellow Sun Belt Conference member and host A-State, the 13-team field includes Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Bethune-Cookman (individual), Northern Iowa, Oklahoma Christian, Omaha, Oral Roberts, South Dakota, Southeastern Louisiana, Stephen F. Austin, Utah Valley, Valparaiso and Western Carolina.
UTA last competed in the Bubba Barnett during the 2017-18 season when it was contested in the spring. The Mavs finished in 4th place that year, with Gonzalez being the lone member in this week's lineup who teed it up on the par-72, 6,565-yard RidgePoint layout. Gonzalez, then a freshman, tied for 33rd overall at +7 following rounds of 74-74-75.
Now a junior, Gonzalez is off to a blistering start to his 2019-20 campaign as he's secured two top-5 finishes in both tournaments so far, and has a 69.33 scoring average. He has commenced this year with scores of 67, 69, 74, 70, 67 and 69 – five of six rounds being multiple shots under par.
Cox also enters play this week with a scoring average under par at 71.5. He's signed for two rounds in the 60s this year, four par-or-better rounds and is coming off a 54-hole personal scoring record in Colorado with a 208 (-8) total to tie for 8th place in the field – four shots better than the sophomore's previous best 54-hole score of 212.
Hicks (72.67 scoring average) has a pair of par-or-better rounds, Jones (73.67) has a career-best 69 and a pair of par-or-better rounds as well and Cronje (75.17) rounds out the UTA lineup stats entering action.
This will be the middle tournament in a three-event-in-three-week stretch for UTA as the Mavs will conclude their fall slate next week at the Little Rock Invitational Oct. 21-22.

THE NEW HOME OF UTA GOLF: Texas Rangers Golf Club
The recently-opened state-of-the-art Texas Rangers Golf Club is the new home of the UT Arlington's men's and women's golf programs. The world's only Major League Baseball-branded golf course, TRGC is the result of a $24 million renovation and updated routing of the former Chester W. Ditto Golf Course at Brown Boulevard and Collins Street, just a few miles north of UTA's campus. The Home of UTA Golf was designed by UTA alumni John Colligan and Trey Kemp of Arlington-based Colligan Golf Design. It features an expansive 23-acre practice area, and a new 33,871-square-foot clubhouse – set to open in early 2020 – will feature a full-service restaurant and bar, covered patio overlooking the golf course, pro shop, locker rooms and numerous rental and event spaces.
