Box Score COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The UT Arlington women's tennis team concluded their fall season this weekend after a strong showing at the ITA Texas Regional Championships hosted by Texas A&M.
The doubles tandem of Chileno and Nanaka Takecuhi took an easy first round match over Catalina Cabarique and Keegan McCain (UTSA) 8-3 to advance to the quarterfinals. On Friday morning, the team took on Tiffany Holebeck and Katherine Jakeway (SMU), but fell 8-3 to end their run.
Lucia Natal and
Carla Pons continued the doubles success, defeating Karla De La Luz Montalvo and Emma Goedkoop (SHSU) 8-4 in the first-round matchup. The UTA team advanced to play Renee McBryde and Katya Townsend (Texas A&M), who had a first-round bye. McBryde and Townsend defeated Natal and Pons 8-4.
Aida Garcia Mendez and
Momoka Horiguchi were the first Maverick tandem to fall, losing to Claudi Bartolome and Sarai Monarrez Yesaki (SMU) 8-4.
Polina Akimova and
Almudena Boza also lost their first match, losing 8-2 to Maria Budin and Diae El Jardi (RICE).
In singles action, Chileno defeated Bianca Vitale (Lamar) in straight sets 6-1, 6-4 to advance to the next round where she took on Fernanda Labrana (Texas). In the round of 64, Chileno won the first set 6-4, but ended up falling in the next two sets 6-2, 6-2.
Almudena Boza had a stroke showing in the first round, defeating Sylvia Viljoen (ACU) 7-6 (4), 6-1, to advance to the Round of 64. After reaching the next round, however, Houston's Mimi Kendall-Woseley defeated Boza 6-3, 6-0.
Momoka Horiguchi had the strongest singles showing for the Mavericks advancing all the way to the Round of 32. Horiguchi defeated Rosalie Gerritsen (SHSU) in round one 6-3, 7-5 and Maria Ponomareva (UNT) 7-6(4), 6-2 before falling to Riley Mcquaid (Texas A&M) in the Round of 32.
After losing their opening match,
Polina Akimova and
Lucia Natal both bounced back in major ways, advancing to the Round of 32 in the consolation bracket. Garcia Mendez advanced to the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket but fell to Priya Niezgoda in a tough three set match that Niezgoda won 6-1, 6-7(5), 10-8.
With the weekend wrapped up, the Mavericks will wait until the spring to play again as the fall season comes to a conclusion.
