DALLAS, Texas – The UT Arlington men's tennis team will round out their fall schedule with a trip to SMU to compete in the Ralston/Nuefeld Coaches Challenge. The three-day challenge will begin Friday, November 1 at the SMU Tennis Complex.
The Mavericks will be one of twelve teams competing at the Challenge. Along with host SMU, the other teams competing will be Liberty, Wichita State, Baylor, Rice, Texas Tech, Princeton, TCU, Arkansas, Mississippi State and Tyler Junior College.
Play will begin at 9:00 am on Friday with doubles action. Singles will begin at 10:30 am. There will be one doubles bracket without a consolation, and four 16-player brackets, each with a consolation bracket. The winner of each main and consolation bracket will face off in the "Playoffs", which will consist of tiebreaker only matches to decide the overall champion.
2019 marks the first edition of the Ralston/Neufeld Coaches Challenge named for the last two coaches of SMU Tennis; Dennis Ralston, who brought the Mustangs to four Final Fours and Carl Neufeld, who won 401 games at the helm of SMU Men's Tennis.
The Mavericks are coming off an impressive weekend at the ITA Texas Regional where Angel Diaz advanced to the quarterfinals, defeating the 39th ranked player in the country, and sixth-seeded Parker Wynn (Texas Tech). Miguel Cabrera also found success last weekend, defeating the 14th ranked player in the country, and second-seeded Matias Soto (Baylor).
Alan Sau Franco leads the Mavericks with a 7-2 record this fall, while Diaz and Solano Caffarena have gone 7-4 and 7-5 respectively.
In doubles play, Alejandro Hayen and Sau Franco have found chemistry on the court, leading UTA with an 8-1 record in tournament play. Their only loss this fall comes against the 17th ranked tandem of Yuya Ito and Christian Sigsgaard (Texas). Diaz and Caffarena have also had an impressive spring, losing just one match when playing together, hoisting a 3-1 record thus far.
