ERIE, Colo. – Coming off a tournament championship in its first event of the fall season, the #45 UT Arlington men's golf team heads to Colorado this coming week for the 10th Annual Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational for three rounds of action Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 7-8, at Colorado National Golf Club.
Â
The Mavericks are the highest-ranked team in the field according to Golfweek as UTA enters at #45 – ahead of #91 Cal State Fullerton, #99 Colorado and #108 Wyoming.
Â
UTA commenced its 2019-20 season by being co-champions of the UTSA Lone Star Invitational, and the Mavs will utilize the exact same lineup which brought them success in San Antonio last month:
Â
1) Paul Gonzalez
2) Caleb Hicks
3) Kyle Cox
4) Daniel Cronje
5) Zakary Jones
Ind.) Zach Cole
Â
The tournament will begin with 36 holes of continuous play in foursomes at 9:15 a.m. Central (8:15 local Mountain) off a shotgun start. The final round on Tuesday will be a staggered shotgun format – the top-4 teams will play in five tee times off No. 1 beginning at 8:55 a.m. (7:55 local) – while the remainder of the field will go off a shotgun start at 9:15 (8:15 local).
Â
Live scoring will be available via Golfstat by following the link attached to this release or by clicking here.
Â
The 12-team field will also feature Grand Canyon, Incarnate Word, Northern Colorado, Omaha, SIU Edwardsville, Southern Utah, Utah State and Utah Valley State. Twelve individuals will also tee it up to complete a 72-player field.
Â
Located 12 miles east of Boulder in Erie, Colorado National Golf Club will play to a par 72 and a lengthy 7,676 yards for the championship layout.
Â
That length will be nothing new for UTA – although altitude likely will play a crucial role – as the Mavs tamed the extremely difficult PGA TOUR TPC San Antonio AT&T Oaks Course last month en route to their shared tournament title. UTA, Houston and South Alabama all completed the 54-hole tournament with identical 873 (+9) scores.
Â
Every player in UTA's lineup finished in the top 30 at UTSA, led by a career-best solo 3rd from Gonzalez – bettering a T-4th from last year. After shooting rounds of 5-under 67 and 3-under 69 in the opening rounds, the junior signed for a 2-over 74 in the final round to finish with a 210 (-6) total. He was one of only five players in the field of 66 to finish the tournament under par (two of those were -1), and he closed three shots back of medalist Nolan Ray (-9) from Lipscomb.
Â
Sophomore Hicks tied for 13th as he capped a week in which he shot 72-74-74: 220 (+4). Cox posted the low final round for the Mavs with a 1-over 73, finishing one shot back of Hicks with a three-round 221 (76-72-73; +5). Jones and Cronje – competing in his first collegiate tournament – both carded final-round 75s and finished with 224 (+8) and 225 (+9) totals, respectively, to tie for 22nd and 26th.
Â
Competing as an individual, Cole shot a final-round 81 to wrap up his event with a 235 total after rounds of 79 and 75 to open the event.
Â
The Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational will be the first of three-straight weeks of events to conclude the fall portion of the docket for the Mavs. Following action in Colorado, UTA will wrap up the slate in Arkansas for A-State's Bubba Barnett Intercollegiate Oct. 14-15 and Little Rock's Invitational Oct. 21-22.

THE NEW HOME OF UTA GOLF: Texas Rangers Golf Club
The recently-opened state-of-the-art Texas Rangers Golf Club is the new home of the UT Arlington's men's and women's golf programs. The world's only Major League Baseball-branded golf course, TRGC is the result of a $24 million renovation and updated routing of the former Chester W. Ditto Golf Course at Brown Boulevard and Collins Street, just a few miles north of UTA's campus. The Home of UTA Golf was designed by UTA alumni John Colligan and Trey Kemp of Arlington-based Colligan Golf Design. It features an expansive 23-acre practice area, and a new 33,871-square-foot clubhouse – set to open in early 2020 – will feature a full-service restaurant and bar, covered patio overlooking the golf course, pro shop, locker rooms and numerous rental and event spaces.
