TULSA, Okla. – The UT Arlington men's tennis team will send Angel Diaz to compete in the 2019 Saint Francis Health System ITA All-American Championship, beginning with the Pre-Qualifying rounds this Saturday (Oct. 5).
"Angel will be facing the best competition in the nation this weekend," said Head Coach Diego Benitez. Â "He is playing very aggressive tennis at the moment and he is moving well, but most important, he is hungry for big results. This will be a great opportunity for him to rack national ITA points."
The tournament, running through Oct. 13, is a single-elimination and consolation bracket tournament that will help fill slots for the 2019 ITA National Fall Championships in November and is hosted by the University of Tulsa at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Diaz will compete against a field of 256 other athletes vying for a spot in the Qualifying Rounds, which will take place Oct. 7 through 8. In order to advance to the Qualifying, Diaz will need to make it to the Round of 16. Once in the Qualifying, he will need to win his first three rounds to advance to the Main Draw, which will have just 64 players in the field.
The freshman out of Manabi, Ecuador has shown success early this spring. Last weekend he swept his first-round match at the ITF Pro Futures 6-0, 6-0 before being forced out of his second match due to injury, leading one set to none.
In addition to vying for the All-American national title, Diaz will be competing to secure a berth into the 2019 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, which takes place November 6-10, in Newport Beach, California. Singles quarterfinalists, consolation singles champion and finalist advance to the end of fall national championship.
