Box Score FORT WORTH – After opening the spring season with five-straight victories, the UT Arlington women's tennis team dropped its first match of the year on Sunday to Wichita State, 5-1.
 
The contest was scheduled to be contested at the UTA Tennis Center, but due to consistent light rain throughout most of the day, was moved indoors to Shady Oaks Country Club.
 
Carla Pons picked up the lone point for the Mavericks with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Marta Bellucco at #3 singles.
 
Pons finished the day a perfect 2-0 as she also won her doubles match, teaming up with Momoka Horiguchi to produce a 6-4 triumph at the #2 position over Sandra Honigova and Bellucco.
 
Horiguchi nearly produced a win at #1 singles as, after dropping the first set to Honigova, 6-1, she rebounded to force a decisive third set with a 7-6 second-set victory. However, Honigova claimed the match with a 6-4 third-set win.
 
Wichita State went on to win four of the five singles matches contested after claiming the doubles point to snap UTA's 5-0 start to the season.
 
The Mavericks return to action on Thursday with a pair of matches at the UTA Tennis Center against Dallas Baptist (10 a.m.) and Cameron (2 p.m.).
