SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Ka'ikepono Anderson struck out a season-high 10 batters to lead the UTA baseball team to a 3-2 road win at UIW on Friday night at Sullivan Field.
Anderson pitched 7.0 innings and allowed five hits, while surrendering a pair of earned runs. The senior fanned 10 batters and did not give up a walk on the night.
With the win, the Mavericks improved to 7-4 overall, while Incarnate Word falls to 7-3 on the season.
UIW opened the scoring, scoring a run off a groundout to shortstop in the bottom of the first inning to give grab a quick 1-0 advantage.
The Mavericks took a 2-1 lead in the top of the second when
Josh Minjarez launched a 2-run homer (his third home run of the season), but the Cardinals responded in the fifth frame. An RBI-single to left center scored Antonio Valdez and tied the game at 2-2.
UTA regained the lead on what would prove to be a game-winning solo shot from
Dylan Paul in the top of the eighth inning.
The Mavs will return the field March 2 for game No. 2 of the three-game set with Incarnate Word. First pitch on Saturday afternoon is set for 2 p.m.
