SEATTLE, Wash. – Pitching was a huge factor in UTA's win over Seattle at Bannerwood Park Thursday afternoon. UTA defeated the Redhawks, 3-1, to open a three-game series between the two squads.
With the win, the Mavericks improve to 9-5 overall, while Seattle falls to 4-8 on the season.
Cade Winquest, in his first collegiate start, picked up the win after tossing 6.0 innings and giving up three hits and an earned run, while racking up four Ks.
Andrew Gross came in late and pitched 1.1 innings to record his fifth save of the season. Gross faced five batters and gave up one hit.
The Mavericks scored once in the second, off a double steal, with
Zac Cook taking home and
Josh Minjarez moving to second base. With the score tied 1-1 in the top of the third,
Connor Aube doubled to right center to plate Matt Cavanagh (2-1), followed by an
Andrew Miller groundout that allowed Aube to score (3-1).
Winquest would handle business through the sixth, which is when he would be replaced by relievers
Michael Wong and
Andrew Gross to close out the final three innings.
Aube finished 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while
Anthony Dominguez went 2-for-4 with a double.
The Mavs continue their series at Seattle on Friday with a 6 p.m. first pitch at Bannerwood Park.
