Mavs Take Sole Possession Of First Place In SBC West Division With Win

JONESBORO, Ark. - Andrew Miller reached base in all four of his plate-appearances as UTA beat Arkansas State, 4-3, in game one of the series at Tomlinson Stadium.

Miller finished the game 3-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and a team-leading 26th RBI.

Cade Winquest (5-1) got the win after holding the Red Wolves to three runs on six hits and a walk through five innings. He struck out seven batters.

The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when Miller scored on a balk to give UTA a 1-0 lead.

Arkansas State took the lead in the bottom half of the inning as Justin Felix hit a two-run shot to left field to make it 2-1.

The Red Wolves' lead didn't last long as the Mavericks scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning, starting with Boone Montgomery scoring off an error by Arkansas State, to tie things up at 2. UTA took the lead back as Miller singled through the right side to bring home Zac Cook, making it 3-2. Cook finished the game 2-for-4 with a run scored.

UTA added to their lead as Josh Minjarez grounded into a fielder's choice to score Anthony Dominguez, bringing the score to 4-2. Minjarez finished 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Arkansas State managed to score one more run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI-single.

The Maverick bullpen kept things in check as Cesar Gomez and Andrew Gross held the Red Wolves scoreless through two innings a piece. Gross earned his nation-leading 13th save of the season after striking out three batters through his two innings of work.

The Mavs will return to action Sunday in a doubleheader, to wrap up the 3-game set at Arkansas State. First pitch for Sunday's doubleheader is set for 11 a.m.
